TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indonesia’s Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (Kominfo) is collaborating with Google to use artificial intelligence (AI) to eradicate online gambling through a preemptive, or pre-bunking, approach.
“Yes, if we can prevent it, there’s no need to block it. We block it when it is in the form of websites and content. At least, the work of blocking and taking it down is reduced. This is a pre-bunking approach,” said the Director General of Information and Public Communication at the Kominfo Ministry, Usman Kansong, on Tuesday, June 11.
Usman mentioned that Kominfo Minister Budi Arie Setiadi had met with Google and asked for the working pattern. “So people can no longer search for or download online gambling apps,” he added.
The filtration technology adopted to eradicate online gambling, he went on, is akin to that used for pornographic content. “AI has been developed to address pornography. Soon, it should be able to quickly identify online gambling to do filtration,” he said.
However, Usman could not yet confirm when AI could be applied to eradicate online gambling as the Kominfo Ministry is still awaiting further development and innovation from Google. “We want technology that can prevent online gambling on digital platforms. Or even if we can’t prevent it, we can at least identify it to implement filtration measures,” the DG concluded.
