Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Indonesian government is taking significant steps to tackle the pervasive issue of online gambling, with Minister of Communication and Informatics Budi Arie Setiadi announcing plans to engage with Google representatives.
The minister revealed that the upcoming meeting will center on Google’s commitment to leveraging its advanced technology, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), to assist in the eradication of online gambling within Indonesia’s digital landscape.
“Google’s participation in our government programs is crucial. They will help us combat online gambling using AI. We are scheduled to meet tomorrow,” stated Setiadi on Monday.
Google has made substantial strides in AI-based services over the past year, aligning with the Indonesian government’s focus on curbing online gambling. Setiadi expressed confidence that Google’s AI innovations could be effectively applied in Indonesia to mitigate the negative impact of online gambling on public morals.

He assured that the AI technology employed will be cutting-edge, reflecting the latest advancements.
In recent years, the Indonesian government has intensified its efforts to address online gambling. At the end of May 2024, President Joko Widodo reactivated the national task force dedicated to this cause. This integrated unit, led by the Coordinating Minister for Politics, Law, and Security Hadi Tjahjanto, is tasked with dismantling the online gambling ecosystem in the country.
From July 17, 2023, to May 22, 2024, the Ministry of Communication and Informatics has been actively involved in prevention efforts, blocking access to 1,918,520 pieces of online gambling content. Additionally, the ministry has removed 18,877 online gambling page inserts from educational sites and 22,714 from government sites during this period.
Monitoring efforts by the ministry detected 20,241 keywords related to online gambling content on Google from November 7, 2023, to May 22, 2024. Similarly, 2,702 keywords were identified on Meta’s social networking platform from December 15, 2022, to May 22, 2024.
This collaboration with Google represents a significant move towards utilizing AI technology to ensure a safer digital environment in Indonesia, reflecting the government’s commitment to protecting public welfare and upholding moral standards.
